With his party firmly in control for the first two years of his presidency, Donald Trump’s veto pen gathered dust. That’s no longer the case.
But Trump’s decision in May to sell the weapons in a way intended to bypass congressional review infuriated lawmakers. Democrats and Republicans in the Senate banded together to introduce resolutions to block the weapons sale in what was viewed as a bipartisan pushback to Trump’s foreign policy. Predictably, Congress failed to override Trump’s first two vetoes, and we’re likely to see the same thing happen again following yesterday’s developments. But that doesn’t mean the vetoes are unimportant.
