The first St. Patrick’s Day parade wasn’t even in Ireland, in fact, it was held in New York City on March 17, 1762. Irish soldiers serving in the British army marched in a parade to reconnect with their roots. Racism towards the Irish in America only seemed to spike as they immigrated in the 1800s. As the Irish diaspora spread around the world, so did the celebrations. Through increasing secularism in society, St. Patrick’s Day seemed to have lost its religious significance. Now, it’s more of a cultural-nationalist pride that’s celebrated.
