Raw diets for dogs are growing in popularity, but veterinarians warn about bacterial contamination and nutritional imbalances.
Behind the trend, however, veterinarians are raising concerns about what can happen when raw food becomes the main part of a dog’s diet. Dr Jan, aconsultant for Bob Martin, says he does not recommend raw diets as a dog’s primary source of nutrition.
While carefully selected raw foods may sometimes be suitable as treats, he says there are too many variables involved when raw feeding is used as a complete diet. The bacteria risk extends beyond the dog One of the biggest concerns surrounding raw feeding is not necessarily visible in the dog’s food bowl. Raw meat and other raw ingredients can carry bacteria such as Salmonella,, Campylobacter, Pseudomonas and Listeria.
A dog does not necessarily have to become visibly ill to pose a potential risk to people in the household. Dogs that consume contaminated food can carry bacteria in their saliva and faeces, while bowls, bedding and other surfaces can also become contaminated. Close contact, including dogs licking family members, can create additional opportunities for bacteria to spread. This is particularly important in households where young children, elderly people, pregnant women or people with weakened immune systems live.
– Dr Jan, veterinary consultant for Bob Martin Cooking food provides a significant level of protection because heat can reduce bacterial contamination. Raw feeding, by comparison, places much greater emphasis on careful storage, preparation and hygiene. For busy households, maintaining that level of handling consistently can be difficult. There is another issue that can be easy to overlook: a dog’s diet needs to provide much more than protein.
Dogs require an appropriate balance of nutrients, including fats, vitamins andCommercial complete dog foods are formulated to meet these nutritional requirements, with production and quality controls designed to maintain consistency. Homemade raw diets can be more complicated. Simply combining meat, bones, and other ingredients does not necessarily produce a nutritionally complete meal. According to Dr Jan, homemade feeding plans can result in nutritional deficiencies or excesses if they have not been properly formulated and monitored.
‘They genuinely want to give their pets the very best. ’South African pet owners are looking for practical choicesincreasingly look for food that appears wholesome, natural and trustworthy. Research referenced in the supplied material indicates that raw feeding remains a relatively niche practice locally, despite its visibility online. Most owners continue to rely on complete dry food, sometimes adding wet food, treats or small quantities of other foods.
For owners who want to add some variety to their dog’s meals, cooked lean meat, suitable wet food or veterinarian-approved treats can provide additional options without introducing the same raw-food bacterial concerns. The important point is that additions should not unintentionally replace the balanced nutrition provided by a complete diet. Dr Jan recommends discussing any significant changes or additions with a veterinarian, particularly when feeding‘The goal is to support both long-term health and safety.
’For dog owners considering a raw diet because it appears more natural, the debate ultimately comes down to more than what looks appealing in a food bowl. Before making a major change to a dog’s diet, consider nutrition, food safety, household hygiene, and the dog’s individual needs.
