The Globe and Mail spoke to Leanne Scott about what she’s buying and selling and one retail stock she wished she snagged when it went public in 2016

“The decade of ‘easy money’ is subsiding, and we’re entering more of a stock-picker’s market,” says Ms. Scott, principal and portfolio manager at Vancouver-based Leith Wheeler Investment Counsel Ltd., whose private clients and foundations group manages about $5-billion of the firm’s $23-billion in assets under management.
Buying stocks and bonds selectively has helped Ms. Scott and her team outperform the markets in 2022. The firm’s diversified fund, which includes about 60 per cent Canadian and global equities and 40 per cent bonds, was down about 4.4 per cent in 2022., which includes a mix of roughly 60 per cent equities and 40 per cent fixed income, was down about 11 per cent in 2022, according to Morningstar Inc.
The Globe spoke recently to Ms. Scott about what she’s buying and selling and one retail stock she wished she snagged when it went public in 2016.We are long-term value investors, which means we don’t have a lot of turnover in our portfolios. One of the key questions we ask ourselves before we buy a stock is, ‘Would we be happy to hold this company for the long term?’ We look for companies with strong balance sheets and proven management teams.
