9News reporter AmeliaAdams9 highlights why crossing into Syria is far too dangerous in the current conflict.

A civilian convoy accompanied by journalists had just been hit by a Turkish air-strike with massive casualties. More than 800 wives and family members of Islamic State militants had broken out of a north Syrian prison camp, taking advantage of the Turkish bombardment to riot and flee their Kurdish guards.

Our security team back in Australia assessed the risk was now too high for us to cross the border. And as we pulled up at the crossing, Faysh Khabur, foreign press were arriving from Syria, getting out before it was too late.Looking across the river Euphrates towards the frontline, we could see smoke rising from air strikes in the distance. Further up the road we met some families who already had Iraqi residency and had decided to leave Syria.

Assad's Russian-backed Syrian Arab army are preparing to face off with Turkish troops and their supporting Syrian rebels. The Kurdish people may be protected from Turkish slaughter, but in doing so they've not only traded their freedom, but also granted Turkish President Recep Tayip Erdogan and Vladimir Putin a win in this volatile region. The battle lines have been redrawn.

The European Union has unanimously condemned the Turkish operation, and called for all member states to stop selling arms to Ankara.and said around 1,000 American troops withdrawing from Syria will stay in the middle east to help control the rising threat of an Islamic State revival, tweeting "Never ending wars will end!"

But standing looking across to Syria, it certainly does seem as though this war is a long way from over.
