One of the UK’s longest, most beautiful and best loved rivers is “dying” as heavy pollution kills its wildlife, say experts who warn that the plight of the Wye is a worrying sign for the rest of the country 🔴 Exclusive BawdenTom

155 miles from its source in the Cambrian Mountains in mid Wales to the Severn Estuary in the Bristol Channel, and has been voted the nation’s favourite.

This encourages the growth of algae, which can rapidly multiply into thick layers on the water’s surface that produce toxins that can be harmful to humans and wildlife. Mr Evans is concerned that the River Wye will undergo a fundamental change in its eco-system. This is known as a trophic cascade – an ecological process which starts at the top of the food chain and tumbles all the way down to the bottom.

“What’s happened to the River Wye is a tragic example of what is happening in Britain to our wider natural water environment,” Mr Bennett said.*Lake Windermere: Last summer England’s largest natural lake turned green due to an algal bloom driven by phosphorus and nitrogen. Four fifths of the shoreline around Windermere falls short of quality standards, according to research by Lancaster University.

“But sadly now, the River Wye is dying – suffering from appalling pollution coming from farms and elsewhere. The river is now often murky and algae grows on it during summer and it’s role as a natural habitat is fast in decline. Last February he warned: “We are on the edge of a precipice. We’ll see the Wye going green each year, people won’t be able to swim in it, dogs will be poisoned.”“We’re at risk of degradation that is so great it would render the river into a shadow of its former self,” he said This is already underway and we’ve got to turn it back around. We’ve got to change what we’re doing before this new system becomes entrenched.

“A new way of thinking is starting to emerge and we’re starting to make progress,” Mr Evans said. “We just need to continue. There is a chance that we can get this back.”
