Why Sundowns won't slack off against La Passe despite 7-0 lead
Ahead of the second leg at Loftus on Friday, attacking midfielder Sphelele Mkhulise said Sundowns wouldn’t slack off because of their big lead.
“We’re going into this match with the same mentality we had for the first game,” said Mkhulise, who scored one of the goals in the 7-0 rout last weekend. There have only been three Champions League winners from three north African countries since Sundowns won the holy grail in 2016. Moroccan giants Wydad won it in 2017 before Tunisian powerhouses Espérance Sportive de Tunis won it back-to-back in 2018 and 2019. Al Ahly also won it back-to-back in 2020 and 2021 under the guidance of former Sundowns coach Pitso Mosimane, who lost to Wydad last year.
Algerian side CR Belouizdad also suffered a similar defeat in West Africa, going down 2-1 to Djoliba in Mali.Guinea’s Horoya, who are growing in stature in Africa’s premier club competition, earned a crucial 1-0 win away at Ivory Coast’s Asec Mimosas.
