Director James Mangold explains why the fan-favorite Short Round isn't in Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. Played by Ke Huy Quan, Short Round played an important role in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. Interest in Short Round making a triumphant return to the franchise became particularly strong after Quan's widely praised and Oscar-winning performance in Everything Everywhere All at Once.
“We looked at all these different things, but the first thing we were trying to do was assemble a story that made sense in the present, meaning in the 1969 section of the movie. Could Short Round Appear In Future Indiana Jones Stories? Harrison Ford and Lucasfilm have made it clear that Dial of Destiny is the final time that Ford will play Indiana Jones. At the same time, the executives at Disney and Lucasfilm suggest the Indiana Jones franchise can continue beyond Dial of Destiny. Continuing the franchise without its eponymous star presents a challenge, with Short Round's long-awaited return being the best solution to it.
