Why Rulani Mokwena faces an uphill battle at Moroccan giants Wydad

“One of the first people I saw when I arrived was a young boy who touched my heart deeply with the conversation we had,” said Mokwena.“All he asked for was to rebuild the club and win the Botola Premier League and to win the CAF Champions League. I could feel the pain and the suffering in him and from many Wydad fans. I was not here for the last three years but their pain has become my pain.
However, the coach knows that wiping their tears and putting a smile on their faces again will be a daunting task. This is because Wydad are listed on the Fifa transfer ban list for various transgressions.According to the Fifa, Wydad have three active bans on registering new players. All were handed this year and are linked to Wydad’s violation of players' contracts. The bans were handed down in March, June and a few days before Mokwena quit Sundowns last month.
The bans will run for three successive transfer windows unless Wydad pay up. Morocco’s most decorated club are going through a disastrous period and are looking to the South African to turn their fortunes around. Just two years ago, Wydad were crowned African kings after they won the CAF Champions League after beating Mokwena’s Sundowns in the two-legged final.Wydad failed to qualify for 2024/25 Champions League after they finished a lowly sixth in the Botola Premier League last season.
