Happy 12th birthday RecordStoreDay.
In 2007 six music fans decided to celebrate the culture of the record store, which for years had found itself in decline following the rise of downloads.
‘Record Store Day has had a major impact on [the resurgence of vinyl] and has turned round the fortunes of many record shops,’ Vod Music’s manager Colin Trueman told Metro.co.uk. Record Store Day has arguably helped to play a major role in that rise, with 561 exclusive releases available on the day in 2017 from across a wide range of musical genres, from Sir Elton John, to Thrice, The Beatles, Andre 3000, and Sia.
‘Alongside the great work the organisers do for independent record shops, their hard work also helps publicise the releases that come out on the day, mostly from independent labels .Vod Music’s shop opened in 2009, fulfilling a dream that began in 2004 when the Welsh Development Agency, who were pro-actively encouraging small business in North Wales, helped them to establish the company which ran and organised record fairs.
