Lionsgate's Naruto movie may already be doomed.
Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Live-action anime adaptations get a bad rap, and the format of Lionsgate's upcoming Naruto movie is already setting it up for failure. The studio's live-action take on the classic anime has been in developmental hell for quite some time, raising questions about whether it's still happening at all. The film was announced back in 2015, and it seemed as though it had been shelved.
If Lionsgate's live-action Naruto movie does come to fruition, it may not fare as well as the studio hopes. Although the source material has an established fanbase and compelling premise from which the adaptation can draw, the live-action movie will have a hard time bringing the charm of Naruto to the big screen. In part, this is because the series features fantastical elements and action sequences that won't translate easily to live-action.
A Live-Action Naruto Adaptation Is Better Suited For TV Lionsgate has its work set out for it when it comes to its Naruto movie, and its plan to release a feature-length film is part of the problem. Although the series is certainly worthy of a big screen debut, Naruto is much better suited for television. That's because Masashi Kishimoto's Naruto manga comprises a total of 72 volumes.
A live-action Naruto TV show would give the narrative room to breathe, allowing the characters and plot to develop over 10 or more episodes. Although this still wouldn't cover everything that happens in the source material, it would give Naruto a fighting chance. As live-action anime movies rarely get sequels, Lionsgate's film is likely to be a one-and-done ordeal. A Naruto TV show could face similar struggles when it comes to securing a season 2.
