, Meta’s Canadian public policy head Rachel Curran accused the federal government of basing the Online News Act on the false premise that the company “benefits unfairly” from online news content, saying the reverse is actually true.
In a blog post, Google stated it was seeking clarification on the financial expectations the platform would face, as well as guidance on how it would account for revenue-sharing deals it made independently with news publishers. The company’s Google News Showcase program, for example, had licensed content from Canadian news outlets., explaining the Online News Act would make such deals “untenable.
