Is it really true?
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Lanfear’s remark about Liandrin not being able to betray the Dark One carries deeper meaning in The Wheel of Time books. As season 2 has already confirmed, Liandrin’s true loyalty isn’t to the White Tower, but to the Shadow. Where her allegiances really lie was uncovered when Liandrin turned over Nynaeve, Egwene, and Elayne to the Seanchan.
While this does happen in the books, one way the show has changed the story is the reason for Liandrin’s actions. As it turns out, her decision to align with the Dark One’s forces was driven largely by her desire to save her dying son. Interestingly, the show has since stripped her of that motivation. The Wheel of Time season 2, episode 6, titled “The Eyes of Pity,” saw Lanfear use the One Power to end the life of Liandrin’s son.
The Black Oaths In The Wheel Of Time Explained Lanfear said in the episode that Liandrin swore her oaths to the Dark One, and they “can’t be taken back.” What Lanfear is referring to is a concept known as the Black Oaths. In Robert Jordan’s Wheel of Time books, members of the Black Ajah – a secret order of rogue Aes Sedai – swear what is called the Black Oaths. They have multiple purposes, one is to essentially release the Aes Sedai from the Three Oaths.
It's these words that bind Liandrin to the Dark One’s service, whether she likes it or not. Liandrin is Black Ajah, meaning she has indeed taken the Black Oaths, as all Black Sisters do. However, as Lanfear has pointed out, Liandrin is not sworn to Ishamael specifically. In other words, unless Ishamael gives her a command that comes straight from the Dark One himself, it’s possible that she can go against him and listen to Lanfear instead.
How Liandrin Can Betray The Dark One Naturally, the existence of the Black Oaths greatly hurts any potential scenario where Liandrin tries to redeem herself. That said, a storyline in the books proves the Black Oaths have a loophole. In the source material, Verin infiltrated the Black Ajah, but managed to turn on the Dark One in spite of having sworn the Black Oaths. One of them states, “I shall hold close the secrets of the Black Ajah, unto the hour of my death.
