Marvel Studios producer Nate Moore reveals the original plot for the MCU's CaptainAmerica3 and why it was rejected by studio head Kevin Feige: 'Kevin peeked his head in and he goes, ‘So, stop with the Madbomb, you guys are doing Civil War.’'
Marvel producer Nate Moore reveals that Captain America: Civil War was almost a very different movie. The third film in the Captain America trilogy, Captain America: Civil War changed the face of the Marvel Cinematic Universe when it came out in 2016, effectively putting an end to the original Avengers team and introducing major players Spider-Man and Black Panther .
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY During a sit-down with The Town podcast, MCU producer Nate Moore speaks about the original plans for Captain America 3. Moore says that the team was far along in the process of drafting a story for the film that included the Winter Soldier and Zemo and introduced "a MacGuffin around the Madbomb," comparing the plot to Kingsman: The Secret Service since "the Madbomb goes off and causes normal people to start fighting each other.
I went to the writer’s room with [screenwriters] [Christopher] Markus, [Stephen] McFeely, and [directors] Joe [Russo], and Anthony [Russo], and Kevin peeked his head in and he goes, ‘So, stop with the Madbomb, you guys are doing Civil War.’ And I was like, ‘Ah, fuck.’ And Joe was like, ‘Yes! Civil War? Awesome!’ And then we had to figure out how to do Civil War. But he was like, There wasn’t a big enough idea that would get audiences excited and we did it.
By threatening not the heroes' lives necessarily, but the bond between the very team that viewers were so excited to see come together in 2012's The Avengers, Captain America: Civil War offered a reminder that the worst fate isn't always seeing a beloved character die. In addition, the more personal stakes for the film and lasting consequences of the Avengers' fallout cemented Zemo as one of the MCU's best villains.
The Madbomb could have been a shocking and fascinating storyline to explore, since seeing Captain America grapple with killing innocent civilians is something that audiences never saw in the MCU.
