Many the key seats the Lib Dems are targeting are in leafy, green commuter belts surrounding large cities – otherwise known as green belt land 🔎 Analysis by ChaplainChloe

The Lib Dems are acutely aware that it has to toe a very delicate line between being a party that is committed to fixing the housing system, and one that is sympathetic to the views of more rural communities.

They are also only just beginning to coax back voters who left them in their droves after the last coalition. There is a risk that the lifelong Tory voters switching to the Lib Dems could be spooked by the suggestion that their picturesque town could be swamped with housing estates under a Lib-Lab coalition government.

The Liberal Democrats have already been stung with criticism from the other direction. The party found itself accused of being anti-home building in Windsor and Maidenhead when, after the local election results, a defeated local Tory party accused them of winning by “opposing house-building”. This, the local Lib Dems said, was not the case. They would argue they have been against “inappropriate” luxury home building that does not have the backing of the community.

In fact, if you look beneath the top lines of the policy plans for all three parties, they all say they want to improve the supply of homes but, crucially, give local communities more control over where, and what type of, housing developments are built. So perhaps the greatest irony of this debate is that it could be a real dividing issue in the election – in particular damaging the possible Liberal-Labour alliance – despite the fact that, in the small print, all the parties are essentially saying the same thing.
