Stills was the lone interior defensive tackle drafted by the Cardinals. Signing Slade indicates he’ll receive an opportunity to compete alongside Stills throughout training camp and the preseason. Stills isn’t guaranteed to earn a roster spot over Slade simply due to draft positioning. A four-year letterwinner, Slade entered the 2022 campaign on watch lists for the Outland Trophy and Lombardi Award. Slade was a second-team Walter Camp preseason All-American, but was ultimately limited to eight regular-season appearances due to an injury he suffered in Week 2 versus Akron.
Slade was still productive, collecting 20 total tackles and 3.5 tackles for loss. Slade appeared in 42 career games for the Spartans, including 26 starts. Slade recorded 88 total tackles, 11.5 tackles for loss, 4.0 sacks, four pass breakups, one fumble recovery, and one blocked kick. Slade was one of Michigan State’s most experienced and impactful players.
Slade was invited to the NFL Scouting Combine, but he saved the testing portion for Michigan State’s Pro Day. Slade ran a blazing-fast 4.95 in the 40-yard dash with a 2.80 20-yard split and 1.70 10-yard split at 6-foot-3 and 285 pounds. Lower-body explosion was on display via Slade’s 31-inch vertical and 9-foot-2 broad jump. Slade also ran a 4.52 short shuttle. Slade showcased elite change of direction by running a 7.63 3-cone.
