SFGATE spoke to several former Cal swimmers while reporting this story in recent months. The most galling fact about the situation, though, is that compelling reasons to part with McKeever have been public knowledge for more than half a year. Much of the information has been shared by a collective of Cal swimmers and doggedly reported by Scott Reid of the Orange County Register.
The most disturbing allegation against McKeever is that her coaching methods have driven at least nine of her swimmers to consider or obsess about suicide, the swimmers told Reid. Danielle Carter, one of those swimmers, told SFGATE that McKeever’s treatment of her made her feel like she was “no longer a human being” and “property for Teri to use at her disposal.
