The announcement that the tour is coming to cinemas put me and my fellow cult members into a quandary
Maybe if the concert were top secret it might make more sense to object to the film, but it’s been splattered all over the internet since the outset in March. Spotify has dozens of playlists of the set list and TikTok is full of clips. It’s been live-streamed by Swifties every night. I’ve tried to avoid spoilers because I want to see it for the first time in person, but even with my ironclad willpower, I’ve still seen a decent amount of the show online.
There are plenty of people who can’t afford to go to the show, who don’t have anyone to go with, who aren’t comfortable in large crowds or don’t live anywhere near a concert venue, all of whom want to be part of the Eras phenomenon, and this caters to them perfectly. Someone else getting to enjoy the concert film doesn’t detract from the live experience.
We need to accept that much as we love her, Taylor is here to make bank as well as hold our hands when our hearts hurt, and that while the Eras Tour is a reportedly a borderline spiritual experience, it’s also a big shiny capitalist money-making machine, and both of those things can be true at the same time.
