My therapist of color was the first person who had ever described the anti-Blackness I had experienced in my life as ‘trauma.’ She was the first person to ever acknowledge that working through the pain of those experiences was a crucial part of my healing; previous to that, many other therapists had not understood the gravity of my experiences.
Despite exhibiting symptoms of an eating disorder, it took a long time to be diagnosed with one. I felt that my eating disorder symptoms were obfuscated because my blackness did not fit the societal eating disorder. I am not a thin, white, affluent woman. After five years of symptom usage, it took meeting with a therapist of color to get the diagnosis and treatment that saved my life.
