A new generation of mental health advocates is speaking out and educating others—a movement that is coming to a workplace near you.

Who are these brave folks? Some people call them Bridgers and Busters . They do not live under a cone of mental health silence like their Boomer elders have. Nor do they live in fear of the stigma that sharing at least some of the details of their mental health issue or learning disability on the job might cause.

Some experts I've spoken to say that we've reached this tipping point on disclosure because suicide, depression and anxiety are at unfathomable highs. Keeping secrets certainly doesn't seem to be helping. The alternative—creating safe spaces and trusting relationships in the workplace. Joffe also walks the walk at work. She founded Verizon Media’s Neurodiversity Employee Resource Group in 2017. She says confidently, “There are plenty of great examples of grassroots movements online to promote positive and intersectional representation,” She too believes the tide is turning toward openness and empathy and there is no going back.

Whether you believe in the power of speaking out at work or not, hearing their stories will help you to understand how impactful one person's willingness to open up can be to others. At the very least, speaking their truth humanizes the problem. It can help others like them to do better work, and it creates a new opening for young people to become role models and mentors.
