If England wanted to keep their options open and wait for someone to lose form before slotting Brook back into the XI, they could just drop a bowler from the squad. With three travelling reserves, do they really need three spare bowlers in the 15 when there’ll be injury replacements already there with them? It would likely mean David Willey or Reece Topley dropping down to that reserve list.
Malan’s figures in international cricket cannot be contested. His 54 against New Zealand in the opening T20 was his 34th 50-plus score in 114 international innings. Moreover he averages 54.92 in one-day cricket, the format of the upcoming World Cup in India for which he has made England’s provisional 15-man squad.
Despite his impressive numbers, Malan has often been maligned. That’s underlined by the fact he is perhaps the owner of the least loved England ODI century – his 125 off 109 balls against the Netherlands in Amsterdam last summer. It was an innings that was in stark contrast to most of his teammates – Phil Salt scoring 122 from 93 balls, Buttler making 162 off 70 and Liam Livingstone’s 22-ball 66.
