You can play Wordle all alone — when you first wake up, when you’re drinking a cup of tea, when you first arrive at your desk, when you just need a quiet moment. And after you’ve solved it, you can holler across the house or send a quick text to let your Wordle-loving child know.

When it’s a really tough puzzle and you’re proud of how you solved it, you might call your competitive sister to let her know, too. Perhaps you post your success — just the stats, not the answer, thank you very much — on Twitter or Facebook when you feel like celebrating . We don’t have to listen to the same music or vote the same way as our family members, colleagues, high school friends or celebrity crushes, but we can all work toward a shared Wordle goal.There is value in the occasional mindless app. That’s why I haven’t yet deleted the silly Best Fiends game from my cellphone. And there is value in the games that keep our minds sharp and hopefully dementia at bay. My go-to challenges are sudoku and crossword puzzles.

When my seventh-grade students play as part of team-building in class, they tend to choose a word as if they’re playingIf you miss the word today, there’s always tomorrow. This is a low-stakes kind of game. If you don’t figure out the word in six tries, you don’t lose money, fame or power. A few hours later, the game resets and like every other Wordle fan out there, you get to try again.
