'As a collective we have gone from anger to disgust to exhaustion and back to anger' EndSARS
For while this unit poses a danger to every Nigerian, SARS poses an even greater threat to members of the Nigerian LGBTQIA+ community. Many have reported that they have been stopped and harassed for exhibiting non-traditional expressions, with security forces quoting the Same Sex Marriage Act, a piece of 2014 legislation, at them, noting that they “look gay”.
It has happened to me, too. In December 2019, my friend and I were in a cab in Lagos when officers stopped the car we were in and forced their way into the vehicle.
The movement has evolved from just a call for the government to disband this infamous unit into a defining moment for the Nigerian youth. It has also become a rejection of the old guard – from government officials to traditional media to a flawed political and social system. It remains to be seen whether it will be a trigger for a more progressive Nigeria to emerge – one where even queer people might stand a chance of living freely in their own country.
