The study found that around 25% of women with the most commonly diagnosed form of breast cancer have a 42-55% risk of seeing their cancer return within two decades.

Doctors have traditionally relied on factors such as the size and grade of a tumour at diagnosis, lymph node involvement and a patient's age to determine their risk of relapse.

In a bid to change that, the researchers turned to data from over 3,000 breast cancer patients diagnosed in the United Kingdom and Canada between 1977 and 2005. The data was used to develop a computer model that identified four sub-groups with"exceedingly high risk of late distant relapse," said senior author Christina Curtis, assistant professor of medicine and genetics at Stanford University.
