The flip of a card altered everything — and nothing — for the Blackhawks, all at the same time. Chicago now has a potential generational talent in hand, writes ByScottPowers. But in terms of the overall goal next season, the objective hasn't changed.
Bedard’s arrival will affect Chicago general manager Kyle Davidson’s approach to assembling his team. Instead of wondering whether his top draft pick will be a superstar No. 1 center to build around, he knows it. In turn, that changes Davidson’s long-term plans and which players he wants to put around Bedard.
For one, don’t expect Davidson to greatly improve the Blackhawks’ roster this offseason. Outside of drafting Bedard, there isn’t some major splash coming this summer. The Blackhawks are open to taking on a bad contract or two in exchange for draft picks and prospects, and they could sign a few veteran forwards on short-term deals to help them reach the cap floor. But that’s it.
It’s going to be a few years before Davidson knows exactly what he has from last year’s draft. Kevin Korchinski seems like a legit future No. 1 defenseman. That was the most important pick for Davidson last year, and he appears to have gotten it right. Outside of that, there are a lot of unknowns. Not every pick will become an, June 28-29 in Nashville, Davidson is almost guaranteed Bedard will be an elite player. With the Blackhawks’ second first-round pick at No.
