Whose Line Is It Anyway? star Colin Mochrie reveals that the show's cast has not been paid fairly for the hard work and content they created. 'The downside is that we never received fair compensation for the success of the show.'
Colin Mochrie, one of the stars of Whose Line Is It Anyway?, says that the cast wasn't compensated fairly for their work. Whose Line Is It Anyway? is an improvisational comedy series that first began in 1998 and ran until 2007, which starred Mochrie alongside Ryan Stiles, Wayne Brady, and host Drew Carey. The show was revived by the CW in 2013, with Aisha Tyler replacing Carey as the host.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY In an interview with Vulture, Mochrie candidly opened up about the lack of fair pay the cast of Whose Line Is It Anyway? received. Mochrie says that he loves filming the series with his fellow cast members and that it was fun doing the show. However, Mochrie explains that despite the improv actors providing Whose Line Is It Anyway? content, the cast isn't paid as writers and has never received any residuals for the series.
"There is a complicated relationship with the show. The cast loves each other, and the actual shooting is always fun. We are all grateful that the show gave us a showcase and allowed us to be able to tour. The downside is that we never received fair compensation for the success of the show. We provide the content but don’t get paid as “writers.” We never received residuals for a show that’s been shown around the world since its inception.
In the interview, Mochrie also says that the cast members' personal social media have done the majority of publicity for the revived show and that the CW has done little to promote the original Whose Line Is It Anyway? current airing. Though Stiles and Brady have not commented on these issues regarding the series, Mochrie seems to confidently state that the current cast will not be returning for future incarnations largely due to compensation and publicity issues.
While the original Whose Line Is It Anyway? series is well-received, the revival has surpassed the original show in many ways, including a longer run and more favorable reviews for Tyler as host. However, with Mochrie decrying the show's unfair pay for the actors who are almost solely responsible for its success, the future of the improv series is currently unclear.
