World Health Organisation pauses testing the malaria drug on Covid-19 patients

“The executive group has implemented a temporary pause of the hydroxychloroquine arm within the Solidarity trial while the safety data is reviewed by the data safety monitoring board,” Tedros told an online briefing. The WHO has previously advised against using hydroxychloroquine to treat or prevent coronavirus infections, except as part of clinical trials.
He credited the continent's experience dealing with other epidemics as helping it scale up its response to the coronavirus and be spared the affect seen elsewhere so far. All African countries had preparedness plans in place, he said, though there were still “gaps and vulnerabilities”.
