Kampala last month announced Uganda's first fatality from the highly contagious disease since 2019, with a statement issued by the WHO saying there were 54 confirmed cases and 19 deaths.
KAMPALA - World Health Organization chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said Wednesday that clinical trials could start within weeks on vaccines to combat the strain of Ebola behind a deadly outbreak in Uganda.
"Several vaccines are in various stages of development against this virus, two of which could begin clinical trials in Uganda in the coming weeks, pending regulatory and ethics approvals from the Ugandan government." "Our primary focus now is to support the government of Uganda to rapidly control and contain this outbreak, to stop it spreading to neighbouring districts, and neighbouring countries," Tedros told reporters.
Ebola is an often-fatal viral haemorrhagic fever named after a river in DR Congo where it was discovered in 1976.

Kenya's Ruto In Talks With Museveni After Son's Twitter ThreatsKenyan President William Ruto has held talks with Uganda's President Yoweri Museveni. The meeting comes within days of Museveni's son Lieutenant-General Muhoozi Kainerugaba's controversial Twitter posts, in which he claimed that he and the Ugandan army would seize control of Kenya's capital Nairobi in less than two weeks - sparking outrage from Kenyans. Ruto was in Uganda to attend the country's 60th Independence Day celebrations. In his meeting with Museveni, Ruto assured that Kenyan and Ugandan ties are intact. He said the two countries will remain friends, to improve the East African Community's (EAC) fortunes. Ruto challenged his counterpart to take charge of those efforts and set out first to eliminate the region's border issues. He said that the border challenges had affected the region's untapped growth. President Museveni pleaded with Kenyans to forgive the Twitter rant by his son Muhoozi - in which he questioned why former President Uhuru Kenyatta failed to contest for a third term after his two-year term expired, arguing that Kenyatta would have easily won the country's top seat if he had chosen to run.
