Right-wing media, the White House, extremist groups, conspiracy theorists and local Republicans are instigating protests against life-saving public health measures in several states, where leaders are working to prevent the spread of COVID19.
As I’m writing this, ABC News had a live feed of protests in Pennsylvania broadcasting on YouTube. I can see dozensof people lining the streets, packed into the sidewalks in Harrisburg. There’s very little social distancing, meaning these protests are potential hotspots of viral transmission.
Significantly, they’re also hotspots for the transmission of dangerous ideas — not just the conspiracy theories listed above, but the fundamental assertion that we shouldn’t ask our government to save our lives, instead relying on the capitalist economy that isYou don’t have to trust the government; in many cases, you shouldn’t, like when Trump seems so eager to frame this crisis through binary political opposition. We can’t enter the debate on their terms.
We should remain wary of the intersections of coronavirus with civil liberties, staying critical of government responses that seem to overreach and those that
