Micro living gives urbanites the chance to live centrally with a philosophy that encourages owning less, living intentionally and valuing quality over quantity

Gone are the days when first-time homeowners aspired to detached homes with two or three bedrooms and a small yard. Today’s starter homes can more accurately be described as tiny boxes — or large closets. Commonly referred to as “micro condos,” these spaces can range from 270 to 400 square feet and demand feats of creative design extending far beyond the KonMari organization method to become comfortable, stylish homes.

A bevy of cash-strapped millennials is also driving the trend forward. According to a report by Ryerson University’s City Building Institute, “Micro units are often marketed to young urban professionals, and are likely to appeal to individuals and small households wanting to live in a central location but not able to afford to rent or purchase a larger suite.

Still, it’s a trend that appears to be growing. Add to that, the fact that 4 million Canadians live on their own , according to the 2016 census. For the first time, one-person households are the most common type as opposed to households with a family. And, so, it makes sense to offer housing that reflects this new, dominant demographic.
