The Who Decides War spring 2023 collection is here. See every look:
Who Decides War’s spring collection, the brand’s most extensive to date, delivered chill OOO vibes—and a message with special resonance for Everard Best and Téla D’Amore.
Bob Marley on the soundtrack amplified the island vibes that were expressed through spray-painted and embroidered vignettes of palm trees, water, and branches. There were tie-dyes and sun hats too. Other pieces with atlas-like rendering of the continents hinted that the designers weren’t solely focused on sun and fun. “The whole thing was based on our roots from the Caribbean,” Best explained post show.
While surfaces are of major importance in Best and D’Amore’s work—no one can distress, embroider, or texturize denim like they can—there is nothing surface level about the brand values. As D’Amore put it, “we’re multi thematic.” An arched stained glass window is the brand symbol, and it is meant to have religious meaning, but the designers also used it to put their own spin on the cut-out trend.
The appearance of the Holy Mother was related to the brand’s commitment to expanding its womenswear offering, but the larger message, D’Amore said, was about supporting women. “We need to continue to be allies, we need to continue to push,” she said. Speaking of women’s strength, the winning finale look, a woven black top paired with a skirt with big logoed bows, was created for Nike as a reimagining of Serena Williams’s 2004 denim mini moment.
