The Whitecaps head East to face the Fire in a quest for their first win of the 2019 campaign
5:30 p.m., SeatGeek Stadium, TV: TSN 1, 3, 4; Radio: TSN 1040 AMThe Caps’ veteran right back steps in for Jake Nerwinski this week, and will have his hands full with the 30-year-old former Philadelphia Union forward. Sapong leads the Fire in shots and goals , with two coming in stoppage time: a 95th-minute equalizer against Orlando, and a 46th-minute score against TFC last week.
“It’s always fun to see old friends … but the most important thing for me is three points,” Ousted said this week. “We need to get on a roll and get those points. I’m looking forward to playing them, but it’s all business.”The Caps’ scoring woes have been well-documented. They’ve been shut out three times in five games and only have one goal from open play. On a 216-minute scoreless slump, the skid could go further: they’ve been blanked in four of five trips all-time to Bridgeview, Ill.
Analytics guru Dave Laidig weighed in on Twitter Wednesday with some interesting Whitecaps numbers. Vancouver’s 46.9 per cent possession is 19th in the 24-team league, and their total number of possessions is also far below average . As well, Vancouver’s opponents get 56.7 per cent of their possessions in the Caps’ own third, the highest in MLS.
“They come only here for defend and kicking and not football,” the frazzled and diminutive Spaniard said post-game. “I think this is not football.”The Fire and Galaxy are different beasts, but the Caps could pull out the same 4-5-1 defensive shape that clogged up the middle and held Zlatan Ibrahimovic at bay last week .
