The White House declined to answer multiple questions about newly corroborated documents found on a laptop believed to belong to Hunter Biden.
Emails detailing Hunter Biden’s business activities were discovered on a laptop abandoned by the president’s son in Delaware. According to a New York Times report, Hunter Biden is now under federal investigation for potential lobbying violations detailed in the emails, with the outlet explaining that a cache under review by the Justice Department has been deemed authentic. The emails were the source of insistent discord during President Joe Biden's 2020 campaign.
Asked on Thursday whether the administration stood by these statements, press secretary Jen Psaki punted to the agency conducting the inquiry. “I would point you to the Department of Justice and also to Hunter Biden’s representatives,” Psaki said. “He doesn’t work in the government.” Pressed again, Psaki told reporters, “I’m a spokesperson for the United States. He doesn’t work for the United States.”The New York Times report, which details developments in an investigation by the Justice Department into the president's son's business dealings, notes that emails between Hunter Biden and his business partner had been reviewed by federal prosecutors.
"People familiar with the investigation said prosecutors had examined emails between Mr. Biden, Mr. Archer and others about Burisma and other foreign business activity,” the paper writes. “Those emails were obtained by The New York Times from a cache of files that appears to have come from a laptop abandoned by Mr. Biden in a Delaware repair shop. The email and others in the cache were authenticated by people familiar with them and with the investigation.
