Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has sent millions of Ukrainians scattering across Europe and beyond as families flee their homes to escape the Russian bombardment.
More than 4 million Ukrainians had left the country as of this week, according to the United Nations — surpassing some of the most pessimistic predictions experts made at the start of the conflict.
Romania has been the next most popular destination for Ukrainians fleeing the war, with more than 620,000 arriving in the country as of Thursday. While causing the violence that has driven so many Ukrainians from their homes, Russia has also played a role in taking in refugees.The Russian government has encouraged Ukrainians to flee to Russia or Belarus, even creating evacuation routes where it says refugees can travel safely out of the country and into Kremlin-friendly territory.
