REVIEW | When young Zim women reject romance in favour of the ‘shark’ who will pay their bills

Vimbai is a baddie. Her mother died when she was a little girl and life threw stones and fire at her, forcing her to either give up and choose a diminished existence or use her talents to create magic in her world. She has managed to study law at the University of Zimbabwe, deftly dodging the bullet of romance in order to secure the soft life. She is in love with Tafadzwa but her experience with him taught her about the vagaries that come with choosing the heart over practicalities.

Her best friend Nosihle, however, doesn’t play as smart. She falls for the charms of a married man who abandons her when he has to take responsibility for the result of their sexual encounters. Vimbai risks more than she bargained for when she decides to come to Nosihle’s aid because that’s what friends are for…

On the surface of it, politics don’t seem to concern Vimabai. If anything, she is happy to enjoy the fickle, second-hand generosity of the “nepotism babies” and young mistresses of politicians and businessmen in their pockets. Their parties provide a great setting for their Instagram Live reels and the expensive drinks on offer cost more than a month’s allowance to cover accommodation and food at the university residence.
