She competes as b-girl Sasha Fox and works in cybersecurity as a senior threat researcher for BlackBerry. She’s also one of Canada’s national team athletes vying for a spot in the Olympics.

Mozil does not bend to the pressure she gets to change her breaking style to please judges and others in this new Olympic sport, so she’s not about to give in to the merely curious bystanders.

Breaking, which generally traces its roots to the streets of New York and the hip-hop culture of the 1970s, is the latest event the International Olympic Committee has added to its program for the 2024 Paris Games, looking to attract a younger audience. Creativity and originality are highly valued in the sport’s unscripted routines where athletes look to add their own unique twist on classic elements such as dance footwork, drops to the floor, spins, flares and freezes. But Mozil is sometimes considered a little too different with moves that can be seen as veering into “weird yoga stuff.”

“I don’t know why but I’m happy doing what I’m doing,” she says. “What’s inside your soul will always come through.”“It’s been hard since day one,” she admits. “I’ve always been told, ‘Sasha, you’re not doing footwork, Sasha you’re not doing foundation, Sasha you’re just doing yoga on the floor.’ “You can’t hide who you are or your style,” Mozil says. “You can try to contain it and you can try to suppress it but, guess what, that’s not going to work. So I might as well just roll with it.”
