Many will be heading to university in just a matter of weeks, which means a new home, new friends, and of course,Unlike students who started at university during the Covid-19 pandemic, this year’s crop will get a full freshers’ experience. That means activities and nights out abound to help them settle in and learn a bit about the place they’ll be spending the next few years of their lives.The date of freshers week varies by university.
It is always at the beginning of the university term, and new students will not normally have any teaching time scheduled during freshers week – it is purely meant for getting accustomed to the university and meeting new people. One of the most important events of freshers week is the freshers’ fair, at which students can speak to people from all the different societies and sports clubs, and choose to sign up. Sports and societies are the best way of meeting people at university outside your course and accommodation.
Other typical freshers week activities include campus tours, library tours and of course plenty of parties.Here is some advice from NUS members, former students and professors on how to make the most out of your freshers week experience:immediately. Often it feels like by the first week, everyone has friends and seems really comfortable. However, there are a lot of people who will be in the same boat as you.
“From 20 years of being a GP to students, I can distil my advice down to three top tips to support your health at university. First, register with a local GP – don’t wait for a crisis before you seek help. Second, check out the university’s student support web pages and see the vast array of services on offer. And third, try to get seven hours’ sleep every night to avoid burning out.”
