Football Fever ⚽️ When East meets West in Germany: Union take on Bayern It takes less than five hours by train to travel from Berlin to Munich in Germany, but when it comes to football, Union Berlin and Bayern Munich are worlds apart
The two clubs – promoted Union and champions Bayern – will face off in Sunday’s late game in the Bundesliga in the Stadion An der Alten Försterei in the capital Berlin. It will be the ninth match behind closed doors in the history of Germany’s top tier.
Union Berlin, on the other hand, had a much less glamorous history in East German football, with the only success coming in 1968 when they won the East German Cup. They then spent an unspectacular time yo-yoing between the first and second divisions. Bayern go into the game with a four-point lead over Borussia Dortmund, who are hosting Schalke on Saturday, at the top of the table, while Union are 11th, far off from the relegation zone.
“Eight weeks without a competitive match is not something we can simply put aside. But we are all eagerly waiting for Sunday when we finally get to play again,” he said.Neven Subotic is not your average footballer. The FC Union Berlin defender has a reputation in Germany of having a social conscience and not being scared to put his money where his heart is.
