Everyone complains about work, but how much is too much?

Like all good things, complaining has a limit. “[Complaining] is toxic when you find yourself voicing the same complaints over and over again. Either to many people or repeatedly to the same person. It means you’re not getting a result and you’re not being effective in how you’re voicing things,” cautions Guy Winch, author of

points out, it can affect your professional reputation. “Even if your coworkers are sympathetic to your complaints, if you’re constantly venting you’re likely to end up perceived as someone who doesn’t handle stress well. That’s not good for you if you want to be promoted or take on high-profile projects. Instead, it’s in your interests for your colleagues to see you as calm and unflappable, not easily frustrated.

So complaining is chill and natural to the point it becomes toxic, wrecks relationships and starts poisoning your body with stress hormones. But how do you find the line between those two experiences? Especially when it often feels good in the moment, and only starts to curdle when you walk away from your shell-shocked coworker.

“Healthy complaining involves a lot of thinking ahead of time,” reasons Guy. “Think about what you are trying to get out of complaining. People often just start complaining without any goal of attaining a result.”
