A roundup of Star stories about Toronto’s Mayor-elect.
Toronto is set to see some changes. Olivia Chow, the city’s first progressive mayor in more than a decade, is prepared to take office as Toronto’s new mayor on July 12.
Chow is promising to invest in the city and to “work tirelessly in building a city that’s more caring, affordable and safe, where everyone belongs.”In interviews with the Star, Chow’s past colleagues described her as a fierce progressive ally and a sharp strategist, while some conservatives questioned whether she could be non-partisan.
Bob Gallagher recalled when and how she fought for the Metro council to grant health-care benefits to the same-sex partners of city employees. He had a personal stake in the vote — he was the then-councillor’s chief of staff, and his partner had AIDS.Just before Monday night’s election, Chow attended the Pride parade on Sunday, taking pictures with her supporters, and the Trans March on Friday.Of nearly 725,000 ballots cast, Olivia Chow earned 269,372 or 37.2 per cent.
