With Council Tax rises on the cards for April, we take a look at what you can do if you're worrying about paying your bill
If you're on a low income, you might be able to get a reduction on your Council Tax bill. You canYou can get a 25 percent discount on your council tax bill if you live alone. However, it's important to know that some people aren’t counted and these are called ‘disregarded people’.
If everyone who lives in your property is counted as 'disregarded' there’s still a bill, however it will have a 50% discount attached to it. If everyone in your home is a student or severely mentally impaired, you won't pay any council tax at all. If you’re on a low income then you may be able to get a reduction on your bill. You will have to contact your local council who will then ask you details about your income and your circumstances.. This is where you might be able to reduce your council tax bill if you live with other adults but you’re the only one responsible for paying.
There is an alternative where your local council can cancel your bill altogether and this is called ‘discretionary reduction’. This will only occur if you can prove with evidence that you're struggling and in severe financial hardship.
