Given the situation with prices, and quotas, protesting crab harvesters say this season is one of “pure survival” for the 3L inshore fleet. DFO's crab management plan for 2023 is expected to be released late this week or early next.
Members of theThe FFAW joined Sullivan’s protest last week, helping to arrange the Monday meeting with regional managers, as well as meeting that evening with fisheries and oceans minister Joyce Murray.
“The department committed that the review of combining the 3L areas will be vetted through the formal CSAS process in advance of the 2024 fishing season,” the FFAW said in a Facebook post. “They are saying we can exceed 42 per cent without giving any indication whether it will be 43 per cent or more,” he said.“What we’re looking for is a fair shake,” he said, and enough to try to make up for a crash in crab prices. The snow crab fishing season began last week in Quebec, Nova Scotia and New Brunswick, starting off with dock prices of $2.25 to $2.50 a pound,Sullivan said the ability to take up to 60 per cent of the biomass could mean a small bump in quotas for the inshore.
