a four-year-old boy from Buckinghamshire, who died on 14 November, said he developed a rash and was rushed to doctors who have him antibiotics.

A rash will appear on the chest or stomach about a day later, which then spreads.

Symptoms to watch out for in children include a sore throat, headache, and fever, along with a fine, pinkish or red body rash with a sandpapery feel. On darker skin, the rash can be more difficult to detect visually but will have a sandpapery feel. Among children aged five to nine years old, there were 1.1 cases per 100,000 children this year compared with an average of 0.3 in 2017 to 2019 at the same time of the year.

Dr Nicole Robb, virologist professor and co-founder of health-tech firm Pictura Bio, said: “We have what could be described as a perfect storm for respiratory disease at the moment.
