Premier Doug Ford’s Ontario Place redevelopment plan, including a towering glass spa resort, is drawing fire from several Toronto mayoral candidates as a new city report raises serious concerns about the scheme.

Councillor Ausma Malik, elected last fall in the Spadina—Fort York ward that includes Ontario Place, told the Star is calling on mayoral candidates to defend the city’s interests in “one of the most valuable pieces of land in North America.” The proposed bridge connecting the mainland to the West Island is a “multi-level building which significantly impacts the approach view from the west to the Cinesphere and pods and integrated landscape.”
The spa resort company is, in response, proposing to shrink the size of the bridge and use a “transparent design,” to widen public pathways around the island’s northern perimeter and putting a restaurant or cafe in the public entrance pavilion. If the province insists a spa resort be built near the water, it should swap the city for land to build it at Exhibition Place, Penalosa said.: The city councillor for Toronto-St. Paul’s adamantly opposes inclusion of the spa in the redevelopment. As mayor he would refuse to sell or swap 16 city-owned acres at Ontario Place — six on land, 10 on water — that the province needs for the redevelopment.
“If it’s not acceptable, then they should come back with something that is acceptable …,” Hunter said. “We have obligations to make sure that the people of Toronto benefit from this, and that it contributes to the important aspects of the public realm, which is green space.”: The former NDP MPP and city councillor expected to register her candidacy soon said Ontario Place must remain a beautiful park or play space for everyone to enjoy because it’s public waterfront land.
“The province also maintains full authority over the site with the legislative and regulatory tools to back it up,” his campaign said, adding: “Brad will have more to say about improving green space and city services across Toronto throughout his campaign.”
