Wildfires in Maui have destroyed the town of Lahaina and left nearly 100 people dead. Here's what to know about how the fires started, the damage and response.
At the start of the week, Hawaii Gov. Josh Green expected the number to increase by up to 20 people per day until crews are finished searching. That could take as long as 10 days, heRoughly 1,300 people are still missing, officials said Tuesday evening. The search for those missing has been difficult because parts of Lahaina and Kula were still on fire Monday evening, maintaining high temperatures and hazardous conditions.
So far, the remains of only five victims have been identified. County authorities publicly identified two of them Tuesday evening as Robert Dyckman, 74, and Buddy Jantoc, 79. Some victims have been identified using fingerprints, Pelletier said. Green encouraged those with missing family or friends to submit DNA samples to help identify other victims.
