Cal, Stanford, Oregon State and Wazzu find themselves in the same unfortunate predicament that Houston, Rice, SMU and TCU once did. Those schools were stranded after four other Texas teams left to form the Big 12. Spoiler: It's all about media rights.
That remained in doubt as late as Friday morning. Pac-12 schools held out hope that a deal could be struck. But Oregon and Washington informed league members that they were headed to the Big Ten.
“Once Oregon and Washington decided to go to the Big Ten, the conference was no longer viable,” Crow said. “You can’t be in a non-viable position for more than a few hours in our minds, so we resolved that.” The SWC’s vagabonds faced similar challenges. The WAC, which grew to 16 teams in 1996, was an awkward geographic fit for TCU, SMU and Rice. Houston went from having seven in-state conference opponents to zero, and only one in a bordering state , when it joined Conference USA. The other three later joined Conference USA: TCU in 2001 and SMU and Rice in 2005.
The time outside a major conference proved costly. Big 12 schools enjoyed conference revenue distributions that far outpaced that of the SWC’s castaways.
