Two years after a positive marijuana test prevented her from competing at the Olympics, Dallas’ Sha’Carri Richardson raced to the greatest victory of her...

Cross and Carter boys track coach William Conner watched Richardson’s race together, and there were a few anxious moments as Richardson got off to a slow start in Lane 9 and had to make up a sizable gap.“I had a little anxiety at first. It was such a huge stage,” Cross said. “She looked like the smallest one amongst all of the veterans, but I knew she could do it. I’ve watched her compete in high school, college and at the professional level, and I knew she was the right person for the job.

It has been quite a comeback for Richardson, a gold-medal contender at the Tokyo Olympics who missed them following a positive test for marijuana in 2021 that led to a one-month suspension. She said at the time that she was using marijuana to cope after the death of her biological mother. “I would say, ‘Never give up,’” Richardson told reporters after Monday’s win. “Never allow media, never allow outsiders, never allow anything but yourself and your faith define who you are. I would say, ‘Always fight. No matter what, fight.’”

Before she became a world champion, Richardson was an eight-time state champion at Carter, sweeping the Class 4A titles in the 100, 200 and 4x100-meter relay as a junior and senior and winning state in the 100 and 4x100 relay as a sophomore. She might have won state as a freshman too, but an injury ended her season early.Watch LSU signee Sha'Carri Richardson of Carter run 11.12 to win 4A state title in girls 100.
