The woman who survived the lightning strike that killed three outside the White House last week might still be around because of her boots.

Amber Escudero-Kontostathis, 28, of Ventura County, Calif., was in Washington, D.C., last Thursday, fundraising for refugees at Lafayette Park, when she was caught in a thunderstorm and was one of several people standing under trees when “six lightning bolts hit that spot within a half of a second,” her mother, Julie Escudero told the“The Secret Service men saved her,” Escudero said. “I’ve been trying to find out their names, so I can personally thank them. They revived her.

“The trauma doctor came up yesterday and said she’s an ‘absolute miracle,’” Escudero said, adding that she believes the thick rubber soles of her daughter’s Dr. Martens boots absorbed some of the impact and helped save her.Escudero, who has been providingof her daughter’s progress, posted on Monday that Escudero-Kontostathis’ burns are healing, she will have more tests performed on her kidney, and that she was meeting with a trauma counsellor.

James Mueller, 76, and Donna Mueller, 75, childhood sweethearts from Wisconsin, who were in D.C. celebrating their 56th wedding anniversary, and 29-year-old bank executive Brooks Lambertson were struck and killed. “Amber has made the connection to the other three wonderful people who passed,” Escudero wrote. “She wants to reach out to their families.”
