For many, Labor Day offers a chance to squeeze in one last backyard cookout, a hike or a trip to the beach. With several offices closed, you will have to hold off on sending mail or checking out a library book. Here's a list of what's open and closed on Sept. 4.
Summer is winding down. Here to mark the end of the season is Labor Day, which falls on Sept. 4 this year. For many, the day offers a chance to squeeze in one last backyard cookout, a hike or a trip to the beach.
Celebrated every year on the first Monday of September, Labor Day festivities date as far back to a parade on September 5, 1882, when thousands of workers took unpaid leave and marched through the streets of New York City. Their protest was part of a movement that led to improved working conditions across the country and created the first nationally recognized Labor Day holiday in 1894.
