(“What is”) The Thrill of a New “Jeopardy!” Champion? via LaurieJStone

Watching someone great on “Jeopardy!” is like enjoying a great singer, chef, or magician. Amy Schneider, an engineering manager from California, is one of those contestants. At this writing she’s on her 36consecutive win and has won over $1 million dollars. I’m struck by several things watching Amy, but especially these three…– Amy is openly transgender and the first to qualify for the show’s “Tournament of Champions.

To be true to yourself takes bravery and many have felt unexpectedly moved. An 83-year-old man reported on NPR that after seeing Amy, he has a new found respect for transgender people. According to his son, his father finally started calling Amy by her proper pronoun, reporting to his surprised family, “That wasn’t so hard.”— There’s something dazzling about watching someone great at this game. They don’t come along often.

As my family has learned, “Jeopardy!” is a great antidote to the problems of the preceding nightly news. Like many Americans we’re glued to the set while we call out answers to literature, science, and 7-word anagrams. During commercial breaks, Mom and I clean the kitchen, but when we hear that familiar theme song, we rush back to watch Amy.– Growing up, transgender people were rare in my world. The closest I heard was tennis player Renée Richards, her name usually spoken in whispers.

There will always be those who don’t like change or anyone different. And yet, I’m happy to see how much of America has taken to Amy. She said herself being on the show, thrust into the crosshairs of society, was easier than she expected. It doesn’t happen often, but it’s wonderful when love trumps hate.

Like many, I’ll be sad when her reign is over. She opened our eyes to many things — and not just the Pythagorean theory or Cole Porter’s greatest hits — but how true courage sometimes speaks softly and comes in the least likely of places.Have you seen Amy Schneider on “Jeopardy”? Comments are always welcome and if you liked this, feel free to share.
